Easy Number Formatting in Excel

There are several ways to format numbers in Excel based on how you want them to look. These are a few typical number formats along with their functions.

 To change the format of a number in Excel, you can follow these steps:

1. Select the cell or range of cells containing the numbers you want to format.

2. Right-click on the selected cells and choose "Format Cells" from the context menu.

3. In the Format Cells dialog box, select the "Number" tab.

4. Choose the desired number format from the options available, such as "Number," "Percentage," "Currency," "Date," etc.

5. Adjust the options for the selected format, such as the number of decimal places, currency symbol, date format, etc.

6. Click "OK" to apply the new number format to the selected cells.

You can also use the Number Format dropdown menu in the Excel toolbar to quickly change the format of selected 

A. General format:

The default number format in Excel is called General. As numbers are entered, they are shown without any special formatting, such as fixed decimal places, percentage signs, or currency symbols.

 Enter 8452.1525: displays the entire number unless the column is narrow.

Enter 0.000000845215: Possible automatic conversion to 8.45215E-07 scientific writing.

Enter 845215255224: If the width of the column is limited, it can show as 8.45215E+11.

 B. Number format:

Excel's Number format allows you to alter the display of numeric data below.

 Decimal Places: The number of digits to after the decimal point is up to you to decide.

Separator (,): Puts commas between thousands to make it simpler to read.

Negative Numbers: It can be shown in brackets or in red with a negative sign.

  

In above image Decimal places are 2 so selected cell number is 1544455.00

In above image Decimal places are 2 so selected cell number is 1544455.000

 

In above image by simply clicking on use thousands separator so selected cell number seems like 1,544,455.000. It is also easy to read.

In above image we can see the different Style for negative numbers.

C. Currency:

Excel uses the Currency format to show numbers as currencies. In addition to giving, your choice over decimal places and the appearance of negative numbers, it adds a currency sign (such as ₹, $, €, and £) as bellow image.
