Gambhira Bridge Tragedy: 13 Deaths

The Gambhira Bridge tragedy occurred on June 8, 2021, when a section of the bridge collapsed, resulting in the deaths of 13 people. The bridge, located in a remote area, was heavily used by locals for commuting and transportation. As a Gambhira bridge over the Mahi River connecting Vadodara and Anand districts, This Bridge, known as the "Bridge of the Gods," is 40 years old and has fallen into disrepair.

Repair work on the structure was done periodically. This morning, when many vehicles were passing over this bridge, a major accident occurred when the approximately 20-meter long span between pillar numbers three and four suddenly collapsed with an explosion, splitting the large bridge into two parts. When a large span on the bridge collapsed, two trucks, an eco-car, CNG rickshaw, and a Bolero pickup fell about 18 meters into the flowing river water below.

Drivers of other vehicles passing over the bridge were shocked by the incident. They were gone. As soon as the news of the bridge breaking came out, there was chaos and there was a rush in the administration and the police. Officials from the roads and building departments also rushed to the spot.

Relief and rescue operations were immediately launched to save the vehicles and people who were drowned in the river. Fishermen working in the river, they rushed in immediately and retrieved the bodies of the injured and the dead.

A large number of villagers also flocked to the river. For years, there had been demands to repair the structure of the dilapidated bridge or build a new bridge over the river, but no action was taken by the government. A major disaster occurred due to no decision being taken in a timely manner. सड़क और निर्माण विभाग के अधिकारियों ने भी तुरंत स्थल पर पहुंचने की कोशिश की। वाहनों और उन लोगों को बचाने के लिए राहत और बचाव कार्य तात्कालिक शुरू किए गए जो नदी में डूब गए थे। नदी में काम कर रहे मछुआरों ने तुरंत अंदर दौड़ लगाई और घायलों और मृतकों के शवों को निकाला।
