Understanding Excel's Orientation Functions

Excel Tips: Orientation Tools Explained

In Microsoft Excel, text orientation describes the angle or direction at which text appears inside a cell. It's a formatting tool that can help your spreadsheet look better, save space, or be easier to read.

First step is you have to go to the Home tab in ribbon and click on alignment or you can also use Ctrl+1 short cut to open alignment dialog box and use orientation for text format.

Orientation is a button under Home tab that allows you to apply many styles.

Clicking the orientation button displays some options, as shown in the image below.

.

The text turns 45° to the left when "Angle Counterclockwise" is selected, as seen in the image below.

The text turns 45° to the right when "Angle Clockwise" is selected, as seen in the image below.

As shown in the image below, “Vertical text” shows each letter stacked vertically.

“Rotate Text Up” allows text to rotate 90 degrees upward, as seen in the image below.

“Rotate Text down” allows text to rotate 90 degrees downward, as seen in the image below.

Orientation makes it easier to highlight headers or significant labels, save space in short columns, and enhance dashboard or report style.
